Who Are the Bubbas?

The Rev. Dr. Delmer L. Chilton is Assistant to the Bishop in the Southeastern Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. With more than 30 years of experience as a parish pastor, Delmer has a great appreciation for those whose task it is to do the work of preaching week in and week out.

The Rev. Dr. John Fairless is Senior Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Gainesville, Florida. Ordained in 1984, John’s passion is for theological thinking in both the pulpit and the pews.

Both Bubbas have written for various denominational publications, as well as for the ecumenical preaching resource, Homily Service. Admittedly, they also share a propensity for the slightly warped sense of humor.

  1. Hi, Darian; I am not sure exactly what you mean. We follow the Revised Common Lectionary and link to those scriptures by date and according to the church year calendar. Do you mean a “searchable” scripture index for our site? If so, that’s probably not going to happen, as we are just two working pastors who do this voluntarily…and I’d say we probably lack the skill and inclination to add something of that magnitude. Thanks for reading and commenting, though!

  2. We missed your commentary and insight and have been concerned about you. You have been in our thoughts… and our prayers. We pray for a speedy recovery for Dr. Fairless. Thank you for all the work you do. God bless you both –

  3. Reverend Delmer Chilton? I knew a Delmer Chilton back in the 1970s when I attended Guilford College in Greensboro, NC. He and all the Chiltons I ever heard of are from Surry County, NC. Are you perhaps him?

  4. Hello, Bob; you have found him. After all, just how many Delmer Chilton’s can there be? I’m his writing partner, and will be sure to forward your comment on to Delmer so that he can respond properly. Thanks for reading!

  5. Yes Bob, ’tis me. I reckon back in the Guilford days I would have been voted “least likely to be religious,” much less a preacher – but as Martin Luther liked to say, “God draws straight with with crooked sticks.” I am quite possibly God’s crookedest stick.

  6. Indeed! We were just at the Hinton Rural Life Center for a family reunion on my wife’s side. I was looking at the web site for them and saw the Two Bubbas and a Bible link. That county in NC is almost heaven to my wife as her Mother’s family was among the early settlers of the county. We go back every year.

  7. Delmer – What a joy to read your spirit-moved thoughts. I believe we know one another. My name is Rev. Cara Stultz Costello. Is it from US2, Seminary at Wesley Theological or CPE at St. E’s or Georgetown? Peace in the new year. Cara

    • Kay…we offered it for a few weeks, but didn’t get much response. If we knew it would be helpful to enough people, we’d be glad to keep producing it. Thanks for letting us know!
